The Italy of the mountains and valleys

La Italia de las montañas y los valles

A different Italy.

What comes to mind when you think of Italy? Long walks through Verona come to mind, an afternoon in endless hills and a wine on the terrace of a small house in Tuscany. In this post I want to discover the north of this wonderful land.

WHEN TO GO

1- July in Italy is the high season of tourism, but calm, because people usually go south and not so much north, as we recommend in this post. There are more hours of sunshine and the weather is great, you will enjoy the Dolomites like at no other time of the year.

WHAT TO SEE

2- The historic center of Verona is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance helmets in the country.

3- In Milan you cannot stop visiting the Duomo, one of the most amazing cathedrals in the world, it began to be built in 1386 and finished in 1965.

4- Taking advantage of the fact that you are in the north, go through Langhe, where you will find infinite landscapes of hills, with castles on top and villages on the slopes. It is famous for its vineyards, so you will enjoy an exquisite wine.

CULTURE

5-One of the pillars of Italian culture is, without a doubt, its gastronomy. But don't just stick to pasta and pizzas (which are delicious), dare to try other traditional dishes that you haven't seen before.

6- A very curious fact is that in the city of Falciano del Massico it was forbidden in 2012 to die in the town. It was a response to the state's refusal to expand the city cemetery, which was full.

7- Legend has it that margarita pizza was named after Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni in 1889. After calling a Neapolitan pizza master to prepare three pizzas, the one he liked the most was the tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza, so He put a stamp on the pizza shop and called the pizza Margherita.

WHAT TO EAT

8- Canederli are meatballs that are made with stale bread, onion and ham. They are usually served in meat soup, the same broth where they are cooked. It is a very simple dish, but delicious.

9- The bagna cauda is a fondue that is made with milk cream, garlic and oil, over very low heat. Vegetables or pieces of bread are dipped in them.

10- When you are in Verona, do not miss eating a good polenta dish. It is usually served with birds.

11- Do not forget to have a prosecco wine or a very fresh spritz on any terrace you find, they are their most famous drinks, but be careful because they are soft and you could drink more than you should.
